GLP-1 medications have quickly moved into the spotlight. Originally developed for diabetes management, they’re now widely discussed for their role in appetite regulation, chronic disease prevention, and for some, weight changes. But as the hype grows, so do the questions: How do these medications fit within a weight-inclusive approach to care?
Recently, I attended a webinar hosted by Weight-Inclusive Dietitians in Canada (WIDIC), led by Larissa Ens, RD, CDE. The session offered a thoughtful, stigma-free perspective on how dietitians can support clients who are using—or considering—GLP-1s.
Understanding the basics: what GLP-1s are, how they work, and what side effects clients might experience.
Moving beyond the scale: recognizing that clients may pursue GLP-1s for reasons other than weight loss, such as improving blood sugar control or increasing energy.
Nutrition strategies: how dietitians can help with appetite shifts, gastrointestinal side effects, and ensuring nutritional adequacy.
Ethics and equity: why access, cost, stigma, and language all matter when we talk about these medications.
The webinar highlighted that dietitians have a unique role—not just in nutrition counseling, but in helping clients make informed, empowered decisions about whether and how these medications fit into their lives.
This is such an important conversation, especially given the media buzz around GLP-1s as “weight loss injections.” The reality is far more nuanced, and the way we support clients must reflect that.
This blog only scratches the surface of the insights shared during the WIDIC webinar on GLP-1s and weight-inclusive care. In the full version, I expand on practical nutrition strategies, ethical considerations, and what weight-inclusive success can truly look like for clients navigating GLP-1s.
