5 Green Flags When Looking for a Weight-Inclusive Registered Dietitian

We recently collaborated on Substack with Nope, That’s Not Normal, to create a post: “5 Green Flags When Looking for a Weight-Inclusive Registered Dietitian”. In this post, we discuss the essential qualities to look for in a dietitian who practices from a weight-inclusive, non-diet approach. The post emphasizes the importance of finding a professional who prioritizes health over weight, challenges societal norms around body size, and fosters a compassionate, evidence-based relationship with food.

Overview of Green Flags

  1. Online Presence Does Not Promote Weight Loss: A weight-inclusive dietitian understands that health is not determined by body size. They avoid promoting weight loss programs, quick fixes, or before-and-after pictures. Instead, they emphasize health-promoting behaviors and use inclusive language like “Health at Every Size.” Look for providers who are members of the Association for Size Diversity and Health (ASDAH) and avoid those who focus on weight loss in their intake forms or messaging.

  2. Neutral Language Around Food: Weight-inclusive dietitians avoid labeling foods as “good” or “bad.” They recognize that all foods serve a purpose and that rigid food rules can lead to guilt, shame, and binging. They also understand the importance of convenience foods for accessibility and safety.

  3. Celebration of Body Diversity and Inclusivity: A weight-inclusive dietitian celebrates body diversity and represents people of all shapes, sizes, races, and abilities. They acknowledge the unique challenges faced by marginalized groups and use positive messaging like “health is not a size.” Providers who share their own intersectional identities (e.g., being in a fat body, queer, or neurodivergent) are a green flag.

  4. Free Resources or Initial Consultations: Many weight-inclusive dietitians offer free resources like intuitive eating guides or discovery calls to ensure they’re the right fit for you. These resources help you understand their philosophy and approach before committing to sessions.

  5. Flexible, Individualized, and Collaborative Care: Weight-inclusive dietitians prioritize personalized, collaborative care. They work with clients to create tailored nutrition plans that honor individual preferences and needs.

By identifying these green flags, individuals can feel more confident in choosing a professional who will empower them rather than perpetuate harmful stereotypes.
